Bastei

A fortress of the finest Rieslings

On the other side of our inner courtyard lies a 14th century building behind the historic city walls. A portion of it belongs to our hotel, and one must pass through the city wall to enter the house itself. Behind this "fortress-like" entry you'll find spacious rooms and historical furnishings, including an original Baroque cabinet from c. 1700 and an oil painting by Robs Mayer. Those coming with a larger party of family or friends can rent the "Hermannshöhle" and "Bastei" together. You then have the entire house for yourself! The name "Bastei" refers to the Traiser Bastei vineyard, at the foot of the spectacular Red Rock cliff (the tallest rock face in Germany north of the Alps). The pinnacle-like formations in the cliff above the hillside vineyard provide its name, with the rock face offering both a backdrop and framework for magnificent wines. Here the Riesling vines are forced to dig deep into the rhyolite scree. The rock plateau absorbs a tremendous amount of heat during the day; and just meters away the Nahe River also works as an effective temperature regulator. The Bastei name is inseparable from the Crusius family of winemakers. The admirable historic estate, run with the strictest of quality standards, today stands under the direction of Dr. Peter Crusius, producing unique Bastei Rieslings with intense minerality.
