HILDEGARD VON BINGEN

How many figures from the 12th century can you name by name? This looming figure in world cultural history who some 900 years ago lived in Cloister Disibodenberg above our hillside vineyard is difficult to sum up in just a few words. As a woman, her life and work represent a singular phenomenon. Here on the Disibodenberg she saw the 'living light,' after which she dedicated herself to the role of prophet interpreting God's word and other deep contemplations. She was an important composer and explored medicine and pharmacy as far as the technology of that age allowed. Her interests ranged from the fish in the Glan to the cosmos itself.

She was held in the highest regard by all from popes to dignitaries like Emperor Frederick I and Bernard of Clarivaux. She died on September 17, 1179 at 82 years of age.

Even today, Hildegard von Bingen's name remains popular and her story quite alive, albeit often among the New Age and traditional folk music crowds. But make no mistake: She made this place on the Glan River into a center of Christian spiritual history. Perhaps you, like she, will discover the power of God out in the stillness of the Disibodenberg.
