Das Goldloch

Pure mineral treasures...

The "Goldloch" is a bright, serene room that radiates clarity. Its central decoration is a gilded object from Berlin-based glass artist Harald Floren. His name graces this room, which also offers direct access to the terrace of a legendary hillside vineyard. In 1901, the hillside vineyards of the Prussian portion of the Nahe region were divided into three primary tax categories. Even back then the Dorsheimer Goldloch vineyard was classified among the premiere sites. Steep southern-facing slopes contain soil marked by a thin layer of clay followed by a conglomerate of Rotliegend and pebbles. The name itself has been the subject of much debate: Some hold that it refers to a 17th century gold mine. Others suspect that the gold is earned through the sale of the world-class wines produced here. A large portion of the Goldloch belongs to the renowned Schlossgut Diel estate. Riesling wines from the Goldloch have gained acclaim the world over in no small part thanks to Armin Diel, a tireless champion of Nahe wines.
