ELIZABETH OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

Grace & elegance in Meisenheim

The "Elizabeth Suite" welcomes you with expansive quarters, including a separate bedroom, a precious cabinet from the era of the room's name giver, separate sitting area, and much more. The generously proportioned suite invites you to relax and repose. The couch can be converted into an extra full-sized bed making the "Elizabeth Suite" a perfect choice for families or good friends. Elegance and comfort are completely in harmony here. Elizabeth, a paragon of European beauty, was born in 1770 as a princess to the English court. She was the younger sister of the later King George IV, William IV and Ernest Augustus I, and the aunt of Queen Victoria. When Napoleon had been finally beaten on the battlefield and the map of Europe was redrawn at the Vienna Congress, Meisenheim fell to the Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg. Dashing Crown Prince Frederick of Hesse-Homburg, previously an Austrian Hussar general, made Elizabeth's acquaintance at a ball in London, and the two were married in 1818. Meisenheim became the summer residence of Frederick and Elizabeth. Using her plentiful dowry, Elizabeth oversaw the modernization of Meisenheimer Castle, whose Romantic form and English garden date back to this time. The castle was home to continental Europe's first water closet. Comfort and elegance were not Elizabeth's only interests, though. She was also active in education and care for the poor. She died in 1840 in Frankfurt on Main.
