Kupfergrube

A trove of liquid gold

This lovely corner room features walls clad in real copper as a play on the famous "Kupfergrube" hillside vineyard.

There are numerous mines scattered along the Nahe's wildly romantic gullies, including those dedicated to precious gemstones, silver and copper. The name of the Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube vineyard references one such mine. In the 19th century the Prussian state discovered the special quality of this terroir for world-class wines and established the Royal Prussian Wine Domain, with the Kupfergrube as its crown jewel. The history of this vineyard is one of toil, with thousands of tons of stones placed by hand to create grandiose hillside vineyard terraces. The steep south-facing slope is comprised of melaphyre and volcanic stone, covered by a layer of carbon-slate. For decades the 'Domaine' served as the qualitative benchmark for Nahe wines, as well as the innovative flagship for German Riesling. Today, the estate has been privatized as "Gut Hermannsberg," which continues to work the fabled Kupfergrube vineyard. It has been joined by the "young" yet world-renowned Schäfer-Fröhlich estate, with radiant Rieslings unlike any others.
